The Shortcut Shutdown

1 minute read

The job of a Computer Technician is an interesting one as I am sure many other jobs are. You come across many things which the vast majority of people would never have knew existed. In this series of “Windows Pranks” I hope to show you some ways you can have a laugh and confuse people. I have used the following prank on my colleagues at work and they couldn’t figure out what was going on! Although I can’t help but think that my laughter was adding to the confusion!

The Prank

There are many ways to shut down a computer, the power button, “Shut Down” in the start menu and Alt + F4 on the desktop then “Shut Down”. There’s one which most people are not aware of; the command, “shutdown /s /t 0”. It may not look like pranking material; I mean what do you do? Sneak over to someone’s computer before typing that into Command Prompt then sneaking away going “Muhahaha”? Nah, I can’t see that working to well.

How to do it

As a matter of fact, it tends to help to know how to do something before trying it. It’s simple really, Shortcuts! Yes, all you need is a simple shortcut. To start with, you need to find a shortcut on the desktop which is used frequently, say, Google Chrome. Right click on your chosen shortcut and click “Properties”. Finally, in the box labelled “Target” paste “%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -f -t 00” (without quotes) then click “OK”

Now you’re ready for your victim.

Notes: I am not accountable for any trouble caused as a result of your use of this guide. Also, I highly recommend not trying this on anyone’s computer without their consent. :)
